How to Make Biodiesel Fuel – The Basics

What is Biodiesel? Biodiesel is produced from renewable energy sources and is an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. It is made from plants such as mustard, soy or corn. Biodiesel is free of petroleum products, is nontoxic and biodegradable. While burning biodiesel emits fewer pollutants than conventional gasoline. Because it contains no petroleum ingredients, it can be mixed with gasoline, a mixture that can be used in different vehicles to produce. Now comes the question “how to make biodiesel?

Biodiesel is produced through a process called transesterifiaction. The procedure involves removing the glycerin from vegetable oil or fat. Once the process is complete, the sub-products such as methyl esters and glycerol are ignored. The chemicals are used to make biodiesel, methanol, isopropanol and Lye (must be used for the titration).

Before the process to know how to make biodiesel, take a look at the risks involved. Lye is NaOH or KOH. Two of them are dangerous and contact with skin or eyes should be avoided. While biodiesel, make sure that children are kept away. Lye tends to react immediately with the aluminum, tin and zinc. Therefore, use of containers, plastic or steel.

How Is Biodiesel Made?

Biodiesel is a clean burning substitute for petroleum-based diesel fuel. Biodiesel is produced from vegetable oil. Most modern diesel engines can burn biodiesel with little or no use changes. Biodiesel is a break at the gas pump, where it is more and more as an option when it’s time to refill. But as biodiesel made?

To make, or manufacture, Biodiesel you must first start with raw materials. The raw material for biodiesel production is a small amount of methanol and a supply of herbal products. One of the most common vegetables used in the production of biodiesel, corn, although used for the geographical location of factory production control of many other plants as well (rapeseed, soybean, flax, etc.). first step is to use the product and raw vegetables to make vegetable oil. Vegetable oil itself is not what you need to power a car, from here it must be converted into biodiesel.

The process of converting vegetable oil into biodiesel is sometimes referred to as the exchange-ester. To complete this process, vegetable oil must be combined with a small amount of methanol, then in the presence of a small amount placed an alkaline catalyst (eg 0.5% and 1% sodium hydroxide solution). Vegetable oil consists of triglycerides themselves, a combination of trivalent alcohol glycerol with three fatty acids. The goal of the ester exchange is to separate or detach the glycerin molecule from the three fatty acids and replace it with three methanol molecules. This process is then about 90% and 10% biodiesel by-product glycerol. The by-product glycerol can be used in a number of other chemical processes for different industries. There are also studies underway to determine whether the by-product glycerol, as it is on a herbal base that can be used as feed for animals. This makes the production of biodiesel is to produce virtually no waste at all.
